If you live in Nigeria you’ve probably heard phrases like “na dem dey rush us”, “transmission transmission” “slay queen/slay mama” etc.
These phrases almost always go on to envelop the entire nation and become the most talked about topics for a certain period. Behind these phrases are stories and tales that the public finds interesting or ridiculously amusing. Somone once told me that every month in Nigeria, there’s always something to talk about and he proved it.
He said and I quote:
“January : SEX Doll, February : Snake And 36M, March : Monkey And 40M, April : Lazy Youths / Davido And Chioma, May : Transmission Transmission / iberiberisim, June : Sho Mo Age Ni, July: Small girl with BIG God, August : Na Dem Dy Rush Us. Nigeria is a funny country. Waiting for September Edition”
Well, we’re glad to announce to you the newest and September edition of pop slangs in Nigeria and it is “Sweet Boys Asssociation”. This pop slang was introiduced by Singer and rapper, Falz the bad guy in his new song which he conveniently named “Sweet Boys”.
“Sweet Boys Association” refers to a guy or group of guys who give special interest to their looks and who go to unusual and disturbing heights to appear dapper. These group of guys have one thing in common and it is to slay, to displace and wow. Nigerians have gone on to roll out the rules and regulations of belonging to this non-existent, yet trending association.
Well, that is to be expected.
It is believed that slangs are words that are not considered part of the standard vocabulary of a language and that are used very informally in speech especially by a particaular group of people. It is also believed that influence is the power to change or affect someone or something, the power to cause changes without directly forcing them to happen.
These two are what comes together to form pop slangs which are deeply rooted in pop culture. They are very powerful and are usually responsible for pop culture. If you’re wondering what pop culture is, Wikipedia describes it as generally recognized by members of a society as a set of the practices, beliefs, and objects that are dominant or ubiquitous in a society at a given point in time. Popular culture also encompasses the activities and feelings produced as a result of interaction with these dominant objects. Heavily influenced in modern times by mass media, this collection of ideas permeates the everyday lives of people in a given society. Therefore, popular culture has a way of influencing an individual’s attitudes towards certain topics.
In simpler words, pop culture is a practice, an activity, or a feeling that are present in the society as a result of what happens in that society. Pop slangs are results of pop culture. Some of these slangs go on to creep into people’s day to day lifestyle that they become comepletely part of them.
We are not sure when the next one will come up, but what we’re sure of is, this particular pop slang “Sweet Boys Association” is here to stay, and it will be around for a couple of weeks, if not months more.
