DJ Cuppy said she doesn’t understand what feminism is and that’s that about it

DJ Cuppy has been trending all day for her comments on feminism on City Fm.

“I used to consider myself a feminist until I realised that I didn’t really understand it… I don’t like people that are hypocrites. People that are out there talking about women’s rights and women’s issues but behind closed doors, are doing crazy things,” she had said.

“If we go around as women, trying to change the way men think, we’re going to tire ourselves out,” she says, adding that women should not focus on “changing the way men think about us” but focus on “our own energy, our own selves, and achieving our own goals,” she added.

Ever since Nigerians on twitter have tried to understand what sheactually meant. Some have come up with memes describing the statement, while others are just criticizing it.

“What I took from DJ Cuppy was:
1. Some feminists are hypocrites, so I dropped it. Which is like saying some Christians are hypocrites, so now I’m an atheist.

2. You can’t change the oppressors opinion, so why bother. Your average Nigerian’s attitude to systems of oppression”, a twitter user with the name @slay_targaryen tweeted.

“Dj Cuppy – I quit because I didn’t really understand it…

It’s better to know what you are fighting for, than to fight because others are Fighting”,  another with the name @osascruz also tweeted.

Basically what these two people are saying is that DJ Cuppy does not understand the idea of feminism, or maybe she understands it but does not have the will power to live it. Whatever the case, let’s look again at what DJ Cuppy actually said.

DJ Cuppy did admit that she used to be a feminist but realised she didn;t understand it and so she stopped being one. But she was quick to clarify what she just said.

See, what she is really saying is that, hey there is such a thing as feminism but if you’re not ready to be all out about it then you should keep quiet about it.

DJ Cuppy is saying that if youprobably believe in feminism but maybe do not fully understand it, and maybe you have not been truly put through about what it’s all about, then you are not in a good position to speak about it.

This twitter user @chydee captures it: “Can I have an opinion about rocket science when I don’t understand it? Can I say practitioners are damaging the environment, or call them hypocrites? Nope. If I want to talk about it, I have to understand it first. And that’s that about that.”

You cannot have a strong opinion about a matter if you do not fully understand it. It is simply impossible, your opinion will just be heavily incorrect. DJ Cuppy realised this hence her statement. She doesn’t understand what feminism is and that’s that about it.
