Snapchat blocks Aljazeera in Saudi Arabia

Social media platform Snapchat has blocked access to Al Jazeera content in Saudi Arabia.

This follows recent feud between Qatar who are sponsors of the popular news agancy Aljazeera, and a hos of other countries that include Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain and Egypt.

Snapchat said it was asked by the Saudi authorities to remove the Qatari-backed broadcaster’s Discover Publisher Channel because it violated local laws.

Saudi Arabia has one of the world’s most restraining media environments, according to human rights groups and media freedom advocates.

Saudi Arabia has one of the highest number of smartphone users and social media userbase in the Middle East.

“We make an effort to comply with local laws in the countries where we operate,” a Snapchat spokesperson said in a statement.
