Buhari on the night of Sunday, May 7, departed Nigeria for Britain, where he is scheduled to consult with his doctors.

The 74-year-old President is seeking fresh treatment for an undisclosed illness.

However, in a letter informing the Senate of his trip, Buhari stated that Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo will ‘coordinate’ government activities in his absence.

Osinbajo was referred to as the Acting President when Buhari first took a medical vacation in January this year.

Critics believe that referring to Osinbajo as the ‘coordinator of government activities’ was an attempt to clip the rising profile of the Vice-President as a perfect replacement for Buhari.

During Buhari’s first official medical trip, Osinbajo, who was the Acting President, garnered massive accolades and popularity for his efficient leadership.

Some Nigerians even advised the President to stay back in London and leave Osinbajo to lead the country as the impact of his presidency – even though in acting capacity – was felt by all.

It appears referring to Osinbajo as the Acting President threatens Buhari’s position, which had unofficially been delegated to his close associates (alleged cabal) since he was ‘incapacitated.’

“The attempt by the corpsocrats to prevent the VP from being Acting Pres. by referring to him as a “co-ordinator” is insulting and dangerous,”former Aviation minister, Femi Fani-Kayodewrote on twitter in reaction to Buhari’s letter to the Senate.

Fani-Kayode suggested that Nigeria should split, expressing doubts that the country is a Nation of equals.

It is time for us to decide: do we have a nation of equals or not?If not let us break it! When u tell us that the VP cannot be Acting Pres.

Read this and see that the constitution didn’t ask the President to name anyone Acting or Co-ordinating Pres. Oga just send a letter to NASS

@ogundamisi @MBuhari @ProfOsinbajoRegardless of the nomenclature used by President @MBuhari, his reference to Sec. 145 (1) clears any ambiguity.pic.twitter.com/erV2LCuFz5

Section 145 of the 1999 constitution says, “ACTING PRESIDENT” and not “COORDINATOR OF NATIONS AFFAIRS.”
